Where we were before this tool was used
In many rural areas of Africa pharmaceuticals and modern health care are either unaffordable or unavailable. At the same time, traditional knowledge is rapidly being lost.
anamed brings together traditional herbalists, modern health care workers and others active in the community to learn from each other about how to use locally available medicinal plants to treat serious diseases such as malaria and diarrhoea in an effective way, using tried and tested methods of preparation with accurate dosages etc.
Where the tool came from
The procedures are well documented in the anamed publication series " Natural Medicine in the Tropics". Most procedures were developed by pharmacist Dr Hans-Martin Hirt.
How the tool was implemented
The work goes on - we constantly learn more about such plants as neem, moringa, amaranth or aloe. We actively research the malaria wonder-plant Artemisia annua, which is the only plant that we introduce - many communities and hospitals tell us that it treats malaria very effectively.
The outcome of using this tool

If you would like to attend a training seminars in Africa, please see http://www.anamed.net/world__anamed_seminars/world__anamed_seminars.html
The way the work has been picked up and further developed is illustrated by the following report about herbal medicines and climate change: http://www.anamed.net/English_Home/papers_and_reports/Climate_change_and_Natural_Med/climate_change_and_natural_med.html
